Medical Detox Treatment
When the drugs or alcohol are finally all out of your system, then the true work of recovery begins. But you must get through this step first.
The very first step to having any hope of beating addiction is to get all of the substances and toxins out of a person’s body. This is typically a 5- to 10-day process, sometimes longer.
If you are dependent on any type of addictive substance, your body will start to go through withdrawal once you abstain from that substance. Physical and mental symptoms will emerge, and acute withdrawal will likely be arduous. Thankfully, professional care during this time will keep you keep you stable and relatively comfortable during this multi-day period.
Substances that typically require detox treatment include:
- Alcohol
- Illegal stimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy, etc.)
- Illicit painkillers (heroin, some types of fentanyl)
- Prescription drugs (painkillers, amphetamines, sedatives, antidepressants and more)

Vita Nova’s medical professionals will keep close watch over you as you go through acute withdrawal. Our team will provide supplements, nutrient-packed meals and additional care and support during this time.
Additionally, we can even administer certain prescription medications if we deem it necessary to help you overcome acute withdrawal. These medications will be dispensed carefully and on a taper schedule (to avoid inducing a replacement addiction).
The types of medications we may prescribe during detox differ by the substance you used, but examples include:
- Methadone or Suboxone (for opioid withdrawal)
- Antabuse or Campral (for alcohol withdrawal)
- Hydroxyzine or lorazepam (for anxiety symptoms)
- Vivitrol (to fight drug or alcohol cravings)
- Ambien (to aid with sleep)
- Diazepam (to treat possible seizures)
- Clonidine (for blood pressure)
